Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Hosts Head-Shaving Fundraising Event to Benefit St. Baldrick's Foundation

Shaving a head in solidarity with kids being treated for childhood cancer is at the heart of an event taking place at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Saturday, June 27.

In partnership with St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is supporting the largest volunteer-powered charity that funds childhood cancer research grants, by hosting a head-shaving fundraising event. Individuals are asked to register in advance at to start raising funds and ultimately have their head shaved at the park.

“Having your head shaved is a daunting prospect, but one that is a choice,” said Don McCoy, park president. “The kids that are being treated for cancer do not have that choice. We wanted to participate and support St. Baldrick’s because the work they do to fund childhood cancer research is so important.”

According to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, research is the best hope to find cures for childhood cancers. While many adult cancers can be diagnosed early, in 80% of kids, cancer has already spread to other areas of the body by the time it is diagnosed. In the United States alone, one in 285 children will have cancer and one in five children diagnosed will not survive. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has committed more than $154 million to lifesaving research.

In May, as part of the introduction of the park’s newest coaster, Dare Devil Chaos Coaster, kids being treated for childhood cancer on behalf of St. Baldrick’s were chosen as the first official riders.

“They are the true daredevils and we wanted to honor them,” said McCoy.
